the nutrition challenges of the rn during a 12 hour shift

This has my biggest downfall when eating healthy, the 3 days i had off work I would eat perfectly, during those 3 in a row 12 hour shifts where you may go 8 or 9 hours without ANYTHING to eat, or only having time to run through the break room and snag half a donut for carbs for fuel just to be able to think straight, I may not get time to eat that delicious healthy homemade salad thats sitting so patiently in the fridge.
What are some healthy things you guys bring to work that you can eat on the fly when time is an issue?
How many hours max should one not go without eating something or at what intervals? (to say you get a half hour lunch doesnt happen even when they call it "required")
If i have better, easy choices at my fingertips, I wont have to settle for the 30seconds to scarf a donut.
Also, when working night shift, healthy foods that give you energy and keep you awake that's not carb crazy!

Hi Ashley,

Although I don't work shifts any more, one trick I do might help you out. I am on one of those low carb diets. It seems to work great for me and my body. But it gets all messed up if I do not have protein (and low carbs) handy when the hunger strikes. In particular I found that I would get busy and find myself about town but nowhere near my normal carefully-planned protein meals. So one thing I started doing is keeping an emergency supply of protein bars (I use the Equate brand that Walmart sells here in Canada - they are a good price and higher in protein / lower in carbs than most "protein bars") in my car and in my satchel. If I get the munchies but can't have a proper meal, I take one of the protein bars rather than ignore my hunger. It keeps me on track - no matter where I am I can have my high protein / low carb meal. The protein bars aren't all that nutritious, so I only use them in emergencies when life is conspiring against me and trying to throw me off track.

Thanks Andrew =) I'm thinking a few fast, pack-able foods like you said, whether is 20 raw almonds, a string cheese or a protein bar like you said. Life is such a weight loss saboteur!

HI I also work 12 and 16 hour shifts as an RN eve. and night shifts. I have the same exact problem. I never get a half hour to eat. I end up with a low blood sugar every time I work because of it. We have a no eating or drinking unless you are in the break room policy that they are very strict about. I have started bringing a few almonds, a yogart, a piece of fruit, hummus and celery or carrot sticks. and now have decided to bring a protein shake with me. My plan is to grab 5 min. every hour or so and eat something healthy and quick. good luck to you!Happy

I am on nutrisystem and I use Greek yogary, single fruit, almonds and bars. But I also eat salads with tuna. I am an RN on a Cardiac unit and we try hard to make time to eat even if we are charting. Good Luck:-) Happy
