Why do I crave sweets after a meal and what can I do to eliminate this craving? I do not crave sweets any other time throughout the day, only after I eat a meal. Thanks for any input.

Mrs. hillcruiser and I often plan into our allowed calories something sweet after dinner. However, it's almost always a good option. Dark chocolate and/or fruit, sugar-free hard candy, fresh smoothie and/or sorbet using frozen fruit and soy or dairy vanilla yogurt...

So do a lot of people; I would classify that as a trigger similar to the way smokers crave a cigarette after eating or other events…..

It’s unique, but certain people have triggers to eat due to stress, due to happiness, due to depression, boredom, food…all triggers. I too, like Mr. Hillcruiser, fill those cravings with fruit, dark chocolate or Stride gum (yeah, yeah, I know, it has artificial sweeteners, but very little & minimum amounts).

Hillcruiser made some great suggestions. I usually go the fruit option when I get cravings for sugar but there are great low sugar snacks out there today as Hillcruiser mentioned. Sugar cravings typically kick in when you are starving your body from…Sugar. The only fuel source of your Central Nervous System is glycogen (sugar), so when your blood sugar drops, your brain can (and will) send some pretty strong signals to eat ‘sugar’. My suggestion to help curb this is to make sure you are not restricting your carbohydrate intake throughout the day and eat regular meals/snacks so that your body doesn’t all of a sudden realize it needs them.

Sometimes I, too, crave sweets after meals (after dinner usually the most) and when I look back and think about what I just consumed for dinner oftentimes it is something on the more salty side. Therefore my mind is wanting something sweet to balance the saltiness out. I try to ignore the craving for a little while and go do something (like the dishes!) or have some more water to drink to clear my taste. Can't always say that it works though.

If i feel like something sweet after a meal, i will usually have 2 small pieces of dark chocolate or a small fudge bar ( only 45 calories). They are healthy options that seem to satisfy my craving.

Dark chocolate works for me. It seems to just be enough to cleanse the palate. Really sweet fruit options also work for me, pineapple in particular. I don't crave sweets per se, but after a meal, I do need something to kind of "neutralize" my palate.

I play a little game with myself. If I want something sweet I can have it. I don't keep any in the house though so my rule is I have to walk to the grocery store to get it and the store I choose is 1.5 miles away. It's also across the street from my gym. I eat dinner, get some walking in, eat my treat, and burn off any remainder in the gym and on the walk home. In this way my cravings become a motivator and what might have been a 'bad' day turns into a 'good' one. I'm also much less likely to eat something extreme while standing within sight of my gym. ; )

Just don't buy sweets when getting grocery's!!! Thats how I put it into my head.
Just buy fruits, and its all mental so push yourself not to buy those candy's, desserts, etc.
